Building Insulation

Building insulation is a light-density fiber glass blanket used in residential construction for thermal and acoustical insulation of walls, ceilings and floors.

Unfaced Insulation is manufactured in increased widths to permit friction-fit installation in wall cavities. This insulation is used with a separate vapor retarder or where a vapor retarder is not required.

Kraft Faced Insulation is manufactured with an integral vapor retarder. The kraft facing comes with either formed attachment flanges at the edges or without flanges (as in SpeedyR™ Tabless Batts.) The flanges can be ither face or inset stapled; the tabless batts can be friction-fit between wall studs. The kraft facing, applied with asphalt to the fiber glass insulation, has a vapor transmission (permeance) rating of 1 perm or less.

Smarter Moisture Control Insulation is also manufactured with other types of integral vapor retarders. CertainTeed’s MemBrain™ – the SMART vapor retarder and air barrier film - is an innovative polyamide film developed to help reduce the accumulation of moisture in wall cavities. When MemBrain is combined with insulation, you get our exclusive line of innovative SMARTBATT™ insulation. Moisture is one of the key components for mold and mildew growth, and reducing moisture buildup in walls lessens the chances that such growth will occur and contributes to better indoor air quality.
